Lake Erie technology boosts Cleveland economy, helps people get employment – Cleveland 19 News

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – What is in the lake? That’s a question many of you have asked for decades…
Some new technology looking to answer that, and it could mean jobs and a boost to Cleveland’s economy.
One example is a buoy, and it isn’t one like you’ve seen before.
Like everything else these days, there is advanced technology inside of it.
These buoys have sensors, programed to monitor the lake’s water quality.
It’s the wave of the future.
“We have a booming water economy, but using technology, we can grow even further,” said Samantha Martin with Cleveland Water Alliance.
Using the lake to make money and grow the job market, but how?
The answer is by having dozens of tech companies come to Northeast Ohio test the waters, so to speak.
“It could be real-time E. coli detection so that they have information about beach closures,” Martin stated.
Martin said their goal is to make our region a global leader in water economy.
Argonaut, a Northeast Ohio non-profit, is training the next generation of the water economy workforce.
Daniel Dolence is one of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District students who help them deploy the buoys in the water.
“It’s for me to get some new experience on vessels and whatnot. I will be going on a frater with hopefully a company during the summer when I graduate this June,” said Dolence.
