LISBON, Ohio (WKBN) – The new technology going into our cell phones and other devices is creating more work for first responders.
Recently, authorities in Columbiana County have had to respond to incidents where a person’s cell phone fell to the ground, triggering an automatic response indicating the owner had been involved in an accident, but it was a false alarm.
Members of the local 911 Program Review Commission admit the calls mean extra work and expense for the departments involved, but it’s not something they can ignore.
“The discussions we’ve had with the fire chiefs and the police chiefs — they would rather err on the side of caution and roll whatever needs to until proven otherwise,” said Brian Rutledge, Columbiana County 911 coordinator.
Commission members say they’ve seen an increase in these automatic response calls over the last couple of years as newer cell phones are introduced to the market. They are now working to come up with new protocols for 911 dispatchers to handle the calls more efficiently.
