BENTONVILLE, A.R. — Whoelsale warehouse retailer Sam’s Club is reporting significant progress in its rollout of AI-powered exit tech at its stores. The retailer’s computer vision technology has been successfully deployed in more than 120 clubs since being unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.
Sam’s Club deployed the computer vision exit technology at 20% of its clubs the first quarter of this year, which the company says is the largest-scale implementation of AI-powered technology in the retail industry.
Sam Club reports that the new technology has allowed more than half of its members to experience a friction-free exit since the start of the rollout, resulting in members leaving the club 23% faster. Sam’s Club is the first big box retailer to deploy this technology at scale, designing and rolling it out in-house to address member complaints about the exit process.
Todd Garner, chief product officer at Sam’s Club, says the move aligns with the company’s commitment to using technology to enhance member experiences.
“Both exit technology and Scan & Go are driving new levels of convenience and raising member satisfaction among members,” he said. “What distinguishes Sam’s Club from our competitors is our ability to seamlessly deploy this technology at scale across our nearly 600 clubs nationwide. Whether it’s a single item or a cartful, we’re revolutionizing the checkout experience.”
Sam’s Club says it plans to implement the exit technology in all clubs by the end of 2024.
