TSA rolls out biometric technology at Pittsburgh International – WTAE Pittsburgh

Members of the Transportation Safety Administration introduced facial recognition with the second generation of Credential Authentication Technology for screening passengers in Pittsburgh International Airport’s checkpoint area.
However, the new technology does not get people through any faster.
Biometric technology allows the camera to scan faces to verify that the traveler is the same person in the photograph on a government-issued ID.
With the previous version of CAT, TSA agents had to match a person to a photo manually, says TSA instructor, Patrick Hugar. “We were responsible for holding it up and making sure the person in front of us is on the ID, where as now, this new technology, the biometrics will do that for us,” he said.
TSA security director Karen Keys-Turner called this technology “another way to validate that the person who has presented themselves for screening is the person who should be flying that day. It also matches them with their boarding pass.”
TSA says CAT is now operating in all major airports in the United States.
